First — stop the water
Find your stopcock and turn it clockwise. In most East London terraces it's under the kitchen sink; in flats, often in a hallway cupboard or by the front door. Turning it off stops most leaks getting worse.
If water is near electrics, don't touch switches in the affected room — turn the circuit off at the fuse box if it's safe to reach.
Catch and contain. Buckets under drips, towels along skirting, and move anything valuable out of the way.
